Mikey phone home..

In the Hollywood movies when the hero has to construct some communication solution they're either working in the confines of a submarine, trying to make a PC based communication system work to confirm launch orders, or it's a jerry built system based on a, umbrella, a speak N spell and a circular saw blade. They're either exceptionally well made, or very badly made. We're lucky.. we have Asterisk.

Last year or so, I attended a course in Birmingham about the joys of VOIP. Since then I have been playing with the technology. My aim is to develop a nice home communications system that will grow and expand over time.

Up until now my efforts have resembled more the speak 'n' spell ET phone than the highly scalable rack mounted naval solution. I have spent the morning so far (4 hours) and here's what I got...

Firstly I suppose i should detail what I am exactly trying to accomplish. I think it's probably best to start off small and build in functionality as it becomes more relevant and able. For my first Asterisk System - I would like to create an Answer Phone. Here's what's happened so far.

Hardware : PIII 450mz, 256MB RAM

I realize that this is a particularly low spec PC - but all I am looking to do, at this point is to create an answer phone. So to my mind - sure it probably won't scale much more than that, at least if I can get that aspect of it working it would be a start.

So - This morning was spent trying to get asterisk installed and working. I started about 8:30 ish, and discounting a few breaks for lunch etc i have managed to achieve jack. Nada.. Nothing.

I have downloaded and installed the Asterisk@Home solution, and that installed nicely. I have my DHCP server set up to server a known Hostname and IP address to this particular MAC Address. All in all AAH installed sweet. The problem comes during configuration.

I installed ekiga SIP phone on my PC (Ubuntu Gutsy) and configured it with the details of my newly created extension - extension 6000 however calling 6000 just returns the error abnormal termination. The console also doesn't show the registration of this SIP Client.

So that's where I got to.. looks like another re-install...This time I'll choose the normal mode instead of expert mode... but that will have to wait until tomorrow.
